And this may explain why in my last few trips to Santiago, Chile over the last years, I suddenly started seeing black people there.
I've met plenty of very smart, talented, hardworking Haitians. Of course, such people tend to... leave Haiti, which further immisirates that forlorn country.

That's only true if it's made out of real swans...
Anyway. I'm off to do some errands, including walking into the bank while wearing a mask and with a gun in my pocket. (I still feel weird about doing that, but rules are rules and permits are permits.)

New fridge arrived today -- had to throw out a great deal of food that, I suspect, will not be missed. This on is rather smaller than the old one but at least the door seals and it's not raining inside.

The water inside means the defroster drain is clogged. We live with it because the fix involves taking all the food out and letting the ice in the defroster drain melt while the food goes bad. We have a container to catch the water, and I chip ice out of the freezer when that gets water on the bottom of it.

That wasn't the problem -- the issue is that I live in a place where the humidity is near 90% year round and the thing leaked. No matter how many times I changed the seal, the same problem would be there. Condensation built up everywhere. The drawers would fill up with water within a few days. In the end, the mechanism just died.
Reported U.S. deaths due to Covid crossed 675,000 on Monday, and are rising at an average of more than 1,900 fatalities per day, Johns Hopkins data shows. The nation is currently experiencing yet another wave of new infections, fueled by the fast-spreading delta variant.
The 1918 flu – which came in three waves, occurring in the spring of 1918, the fall of 1918; and the winter and spring of 1919 – killed an estimated 675,000 Americans, according to the Centers for the Disease Control and Prevention. It was considered America’s most lethal pandemic in recent history up until now.
Well, one could say that the current pandemic was literally more "dead-ly", in sense of producing more deaths. But yes, proportion matters.

Lies, damn lies and statistics.
Raw numbers have a purpose. But when compare to different sets, in this case to time periods. The numbers have to be normalized or it's useless trivia.

Every year, far more Americans die by slipping in the shower, than by being attacked by alligators.

If one of my stats professors heard you talking like that, they would have read you the riot act.
