In the wake of the terrorist incident in Texas, a little verse on the general quality of the news coverage of incidents:

Many slain
The news outlets are showing photographs
Of everybody that the terrorist has killed
And all the little ghoulies drink their fill
Thanks to newsroom shills
On the internet some bloggers say they go to far---
That the newsies titillate but don't inform
But the newsies all buzz in a swarm
And it keeps them warm
Many slain---it's in my ears and in my eyes
From the outlets I despise...

---apologies to "Penny Lane"

Have today off but have to use vacation time to get paid as the contract agency doesn't have MLK day for a holiday.

Got snow last night, and rain on top of that. Very hard to clear the snow. Got a drainage path to the road and some more. Neighbor plowed the end of the driveway where it can be plowed. Can't plow further up.

That will be my day's work.

So the hostage-taker had jihadist tendencies for quite a while

In 2001, Colleyville synagogue 'menace' wished others had died in 9/11

Malik Faisal Akram, who held four people hostage in the Beth Israel Synagogue in Colleyville on Saturday, was banned from appearing in courts in Northgate, England, in 2001 for threatening and abusing staff and allegedly telling a court usher that he wished the usher had died on one of the 9/11 planes.

So I tortured myself with some NPR all driving back from dropping off my son with his mom. “Fresh air“ was interviewing some woman who has written a book about her experiences as a “black, female US attorney“.  Practically every other sentence she uttered about her work was prefaced with, “as a black woman…”. She then went on to complain about all the things she had to “struggle“ with; like colleagues who were suspicious that she put her race ahead of her job. Gosh, I wonder where they got that idea?

Biden says George Floyd's death meant more than MLK?

Why do they even let him speak in public?  Just when you think he can't get any worse...

Observe that he said that in 2020; the background says "Biden for president."  He was still a candidate then.

Well, in fairness, it could also mean that Biden doesn’t know what year it is, and doesn’t know he’s president…

I see "President Biden" in the background.  I was under the impression this was current.  He also has his mask down and is making an appearance, which he didn't do much before the election.  Still, what a thoughtless thing to say.

The hostages freed themselves due to training. Still not sure whether the terrorist killed himself or the FBI did it.

No infidels killed, no virgins for him!

I remember when MLK was assassinated, I took a longer, different (subway and bus) route home, as the standard route went right through the ghetto.

When King was killed, I was supposed to go into downtown Chicago with some friends; we were planning to go a concert (Phil Ochs, I think it was). We were going to go in by Elevated---and the West Side El ran right through the West Side neighborhoods that were, at that moment, burning.

Well, we never made it to the concert.  None of our parents (wisely) would let us go.
