Good morning. I didn’t watch the wretched thing, but couldn’t avoid the headlines this morning. So raise your hand if you think the whole “ Will Smith punches Chris Rock at the Oscars “thing was a choreographed stunt in order to drum up ratings?

Reply to Occasional Reader in 1: Didn't even hear about it until I saw your post. Personally I think the best thing for the Oscars would be for the nominees to fight to the death. That way we could clear away a lot of useless and frankly dangerous people.

I read something this weekend--don't ask me where, probably InstaPundit--where the writer said the Oscars were created to push the producers to make certain kinds of films, and they could do it no other way. The filmmakers, however, loved getting awards of any kind, and so poof! The Oscars were created. Anywho--good morning, campers.

Reply to vxbush in 3: Mornin' It's been more than 30 years since I watched any kind of award show. I think 1984 was the last time.

Is the fact that so few of us watch TV shows anymore a result of us getting older and having less interest in the programmed material, or is it more the expansion of YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, and other venues to play on demand? I don't think we've watched anything on broadcast TV in years.

Reply to vxbush in 8: We got rid of cable years ago. Have Roku and Amazon Prime, and occasionally buy a show. But we don't watch much.

Reply to vxbush in 8: In NYC, "broadcast" TV went from plain radio waves to digital some 15-20 years ago. There were conversion boxes that were distributed (I forget how) that were supposed to enable one's existing TV to be able to receive the new signals. They didn't work---at least, mine didn't, the result being that I chucked the TV; there hadn't been much other than some of the permutations of the "Law and Order" franchise that had seemed worth watching on broadcast TV for some time, and the "L&O" stuff gets a little heavy and grim, not to mention repetitive, after a while. Getting cable TV was something I briefly considered, but the only thing that really interested me was TCM, which was part of the premium package. It seemed much more sensible to spend the money on buying and/or renting the films I wanted to see. Never got into the streaming thing.

Interesting - major Russian telecom is using BGP - Border Gateway Protocol, used to tell Internet routers how to access various addresses - to intercept Twitter traffic. It should only affect users in Russia, but using BGP to block access to sites can cause wider problems. Article here

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 11: My three favorite things about the “law and order“ franchise. First, the fact that in that universe, the typical homicide in New York City is a billionaire investment banker (white, of course) murdering his supermodel girlfriend and trying to pin it on the doorman. Second, that even while being interviewed by detectives about their next-door neighbor who has been murdered, nobody stops doing what they are doing; bakers keep baking bread, florists keep arranging flowers, etc. Third, suspects go on trial seemingly within about two days of being arrested, and the trial takes about ten minutes. Swift justice!

Vlad is living up to his namesake Roman Abramovich, Ukrainian negotiators poisoned in Kyiv talks - WSJ report Russian-Israeli oligarch Roman Abramovich and the Ukrainian negotiators in the ceasefire talks were allegedly poisoned during a meeting in Kyiv last month, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. Abramovich and the Ukrainian delegation, led by chief negotiator Mykhailo Podolyak, reportedly suffered from symptoms of poisoning after the Kyiv meeting held some time in February, shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine, WSJ reporter Max Colchester reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Sources claimed they were poisoned by Russian hardliners who want to sabotage ceasefire negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, the report stated. A source close to Abramovich, however, said that it was not clear who targeted the oligarch and the Ukrainian delegation. The condition of the Russian-Israeli oligarch and the Ukrainian negotiating team has since improved and their lives are not in danger. Maybe it wasn't Vlad after all. He would have done a better job.

Fatfinger He's the man The man who just cannot text It leaves him vexed! He uses That finger To try to type his words on his screen But makes a scene! For the letters he tries to select Are all altered by auto-correct So that when he tries to read what he's writing He's reduced to nail-biting Fatfinger He should try A rubber-tipped stylus pen Then try again!
