How can you possibly have a cold, when the news is besetting us on all sides with dire tales of catastrophic global warming?

Oh, yes, that's exactly what they want.

What can I say? I'm multi-talented.

Oh, I/we all knew that.

Meanwhile, the amount that the loons at NPR are ramping up the "global warming/climate change" lunacy to an unbelievable degree.  They were going on about rising sea levels again, and talking about how both the poor folks on one side of the East River and the not-so-poor folks on the other side of the East River are facing imminent inundation in a mere fifty years, and seawalls will be of no avail.

How can people believe this layer-cake of nonsense?

Are you sure it's just a cold?

Have you participated in any (male) gay orgies recently?

So UN HQ will be washed out to sea.

But there's a downside, too, I assume?

Oceania has never been at war with two consecutive quarters of economic contraction.

Heh.  It was a weird feature, contrasting the bucolic beauties of some highly-cultivated grounds surrounding a housing project (in Harlem, I think), with the fast-growing crop of waterfront highrises on the Brooklyn side of the river.  To hear them tell it, all this stuff is going to be "flooded out," but they're pretty vague (surprise!) as to what that actually means.  But, to show that this was not all made up, they interviewed a restaurateur on the Brooklyn side who struck water when he was digging in the cellar of his waterfront or near-waterfront restaurant.

Had an arborist come in.  They won't cut the tree but said it's dying.

I've written the city arborist asking for them to get the fuck out of the way.

Depending on how that goes I need to get the neighbor to sign off, which will be tough.  He said he wanted to buy the property, blocked the first sale, then came back and said he didn't have the money.

If that fails I don't know what I can do.  No one will buy the house because of the tree issue.  I have a piece of property that, in real terms, is worth exactly $0.

Meanwhile up here in the Northwet were having a HEAT WAVE... mid 90's for crying out loud.

Media is talking about "cooling inequity" how poor people can't afford air conditioning.

So to combat "cooling inequity" we have to use tax money to buy AC...

But AC is causing gorebul warming.....

I wish somebody would make up my mind!

Housing costs will go up, because that's all they do there.

How fast is the tree dying?

If the city gives permission, I think the neighbor might go along for a price. If the city doesn't agree, the neighbor might be willing to work with you against them for a price. The last resort would be a lawsuit against the city for depriving you of your property rights, but that's an expensive hassle.

He seems to be the kind of asshole who would rather screw over everyone, including himself, than cooperate to your mutual benefit.

Ah. That might explain all the overgrown treehuggers.

I sent off my complaint to the city.  Now I'm having the umpteenth panic attack of the week waiting for the response. Actually, I've been in more or less a perpetual panic attack since, oh, last June, but it's noticeably worse today.

Just tried to start my car, and it wouldn't turn over---instead, though the lights on the dash lit up, all I got was a sort of "brrrrrrrrrrrrrp!" kind of like the sound a playing card makes in the spokes of a bike wheel.

Thing seemed to work fine Monday, when I moved it for alternate-side parking.  Could the heat possibly have affected the battery. or is there some other explanation?

Low battery, get a jump

Cars with computers will not crank if the Voltage and Amperage don't meet specifications.

Yes, heat can affect a battery.

Thanks!  This is an old car---a '99 Nissan Maxima---so it's not loaded with computer stuff; the odometer is about the only thing.  The gas gauge is still a real gauge, as is the heat gauge and speedometer.  It used to have a remote for unlocking the car, but that's been dead for so long I can't remember.

However, I drive it very little; got out of the habit when recovering from the foot surgery (nothing like a boot on your right foot to get you out of the habit of driving), and it's such a pain in the ass to find a parking space in NYC where you're going, and to get one when you get back from where you were,  that the most exercise it's gotten lately is my moving the machine for alternate-side parking.   So it's not like the battery's had occasion to get charged.

I've occasionally referred to it as a "Nissan Eczema," simply because of the rust which ruins a few bits of its complexion.  I haven't actually named a car since I referred to the Volvo 122 I had in school as "The Iron Lung," in honor of its having a little bit of a problem with the exhaust system I could not afford to fix.  I was driving from Chicago to Miami my second year when the fumes from the exhaust knocked me out just as I was nearing Atlanta; I came to driving down the highway median at about 50 mph.  I was, fortunately, able to make it into Atlanta for an overnight stopover.
