From The Scroll email newsletter (no link in it, but see below for their source) Jan. 7: Did the U.S. Just Capture a Russian or Iranian Spy Ship? The United States boarded and seized an oil tanker from the Iranian shadow fleet, sailing under a Russian flag and under Russian government protection, in the North Atlantic on Wednesday, pursuant to a U.S. court order over this ship’s suspected violation of the U.S. blockade on Venezuela. The seizure resolved what had become a mounting diplomatic standoff, with the Russians having dispatched a submarine and a surface combat ship to escort the tanker past American patrols. Moscow went to an inordinate amount of trouble to try to protect the ship, despite it being described in media reports as an “empty, rusting oil tanker.” But was the whole standoff really about stopping an “empty, rusting oil tanker” from trading “sanctioned and illicit Venezuelan oil”? This seems doubtful. Likely, because the ship was carrying Russian and/or Iranian personnel or intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities to support the Venezuelan regime, and Moscow judged that the risk of capture or exposure of these assets outweighed the risk of a diplomatic incident.

Random question to start the day: other than Trump himself, who do you think is the most impactful member of Trump's administration? You have serious contenders with JD Vance, Marco Rubio, Hegseth, or Stephen Miller, depending on your area of focus. Maybe it's not any of these. Maybe it should be who is the most impactful for hte long haul? I'm still leaning towards the guys in DOGE who are still working within the GAO. I'm afraid Rubio is going to burn out soon.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 15: Most bizarre call I think I was ever on. Huge fight at a house that spilled into the yard. All in various states of undress. Lots of bruises, facial injuries and a few joint injuries. It was an "insemination" party. A bunch of gay guys and a bunch of lesbian gals. The fight was over which guys got to donate to the turkey baster the order the gals got to use the baster.
