In #5 Kosh's Shadow said: So you think his writings are Major Bat Guano? Pretty much. Leaving aside that Terry Southern did a really lousy screenplay for Evelyn Waugh's The Loved One, his own writing was pretty much Sniggering Hipster. He was of the school that sex is wonderful and desirable at all times if hipsters were doing it, but icky and disgusting if non-hipsters did it. The premise of The Magic Christian, that money was great for Guy Grand because he could do what he wanted, but something that all the people from whom Grand got his jollies by humiliating them because they didn't have as much as he had and would do debasing things to get it, was pretty disgusting. Likewise, his premise in Candy was that it was great that everyone she encountered (including, at the end, her father) got to poke her because she was cute and invincibly innocent, but ultimately funny because she was thereby being humiliated, is a showcase for both his nasty attitudes towards sex and towards Christians.
He was good at humorous names, I'll give him that. But---as I believe I said here not long ago---the characters in Strangelove who hold up the best, such as Major Kong, are the ones that he clearly hated the most and wanted the most to poke fun at.

Language note: "When his teacher asks him to form a sentence with the words “agrarian reform,” her brother eagerly chimes in out loud: “The agrarian reform is very sour!” His sentence rhymes in Spanish..." I wouldn't say "rhymes", so much as being a pun: La reforma agraria es muy agria.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 13: It's amazing how stirring an anthem can be if you throw in a clash of cymbals at the end of every line.

Well, any good anthem should indeed be rife with cymbalism...

Reply to Occasional Reader in 15: The dream worker-state of communism is sort of a giant human ant-hill. I suppose, therefore, it's only fitting to refer to the song which celebrates such a state as "an-THEM!"
