Quiet morning.  Daughter is up and sort of working on school stuff, though I caught her reading the Hitchhiker's Guide instead of doing work.  Can't really fault her on that.

there is talk of extending the school closures for the remainder of the year.

You may have to get her the three follow on books.

We have alarms on doors at work. If they are held open to long they start beeping.

One door malfunctioned and would beep anytime someone opened it.

One wag printed a logo for Sirius Cybernetics Corporation and taped it to the door.

I once had a couple of students write on their course evals that "Dr. Septimius is a hoopy frood who always knows where his towel is."

Earthquake in Utah

If I were writing a disaster novel, the next catastrophe would be the blowing up of the Yellowstone Caldera

Shelter in place with your stockpile of toilet paper, Clorox wipes and BluRays for your big screen TV one day, deerskin clothing hunting with spears and rocks the next.

This seems so wrong.

PHILADELPHIA - In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Philadelphia police officers have been instructed to stop making arrests for certain non-violent crimes. The department said individuals who would normally be arrested and processed at a detective division, will be temporarily detained to confirm identification and complete necessary paperwork. The individual will then be arrested on a warrant at a later date.

This seems about right.

To any multinational corporations that come to Congress asking for taxpayer $$$, you better come prepared to explain how you will move supply chains and jobs back to America if you want my vote

If you believe that, you are ready to buy the bridge I just erected in Manhattan. I honestly expect them to come back and say that they are too overworked to issue those warrants.

And this is a recipe for complete disaster. They really want martial law to be enacted.

Ever have a meal so good the next day you can't stop thinking about it?  That was my dinner last night.

If I recall my Erich Kastner correctly, macaroni and cheese with ham would cause you to be unable to stop thinking about A Meal and the Detectives.

So I'm authorized to work from home, but that is much easier said than done. Suffice to say there are numerous steps that all require different passwords and even then the system won't allow me to download the VPN client. I spent four hours on this and didn't have breakfast, so I was pretty cranky. I came home and got something to eat, and I'm going to try again from my home network. Wish me luck.

Yeah, I can commiserate. We're trying to get our folks all set up to work from home, and I've walked through I don't know how many explanations of installing the VPN client, installing the soft phone, how to get to network resources, etc. etc. It's getting exhausting for everyone.

It's vastly more complicated than it needs to be. I went back to the office and downloaded the VPN client and waiting for my supervisor to show me what to do next. Now trying to configure Outlook web access.

Heh. Well, what the technology is doing is frankly really complex, and you are dealing with protocols on top of protocols on top of protocols, almost all the way down, turtle style. It would totally look like magic to someone from even 1970.

There are 107 cases of the virus reported in Wisconsin now.  They're still all in the lower half of the state, majority in the very bottom section (Milwaukee & Madison areas).  Fortunately no deaths and one recovery.  Decided to go to the grocery store (Aldis) this morning.  Why wait until it shows up in my area?  We were pretty well stocked up before but topped off the inventory.  We're pretty rural here so we usually have supplies ahead anyways.  No milk, bread was low, got the last bag of flour and the second last package of toilet paper.  Everything else was pretty available.  Saw a few people wearing masks and gloves.  Everyone was friendly and courteous.  Still didn't like being out among them though.  Not much traffic either.  How are things in other areas?

In college one year, the standard Halloween costume was a Tylenol capsule.

I told my supervisor there should be a massive IT initiative to make all the systems play nicely together. She said yeah, that will never happen. It's true. You've got various groups with their own approach to security, so we have multiple logins and such. In big companies,  you have things that are implemented over time in response to immediate needs and there's no coordination or oversight.

Oh,I remember those days. I was working after school n a pharmacy part time when it happened. I remember having to gather up all the Tylenol.

Am I correct in assuming you aren't going to Cape Cod? I think my advice at the time was sound, but events have proven me wrong. Just today, I learned a wedding I was supposed to attend is postponed to the fall (the ceremony will go on, but the reception will be rescheduled).

Amazon's VPH and systems are really well done. MFA logon. Our group because we're under ITAR, EAR and other export controls has another layer of security. But it's relatively painless and works well.

This is so sad. Normally at this time of year, the festival attendees would be having a ball.
