Talked with a neighbor who teaches high school.  My kids are in a routine with their virtual schooling -- every day they sit down and get to work without me having to say boo.  He works for a neighboring county.  I said "aren't you doing virtual school?"  He replied "I am, but my students aren't."  He told me how he can't get in touch with them.  The phone numbers on records go to aunts, father's that live out of state and don't even know the kids' names, etc.  Most of them don't even have access to computers.  The more he talked, the more I found myself thinking "where are the parents of these kids?"  But I know the answer.

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/09/weekly-jobless-claims-report.html

10% up in the last three weeks

what percentage are “claiming” unemployment but have a job to go back to when this crisis is over? Of these, how long can their employer stay idle and still open later?

when “unemployment” checks pay as well as the job, and the Democrats can be counted on to campaign for extending those benefits indefinitely, or at least extending until after the November election, are the unemployed being bought for their votes?

I think in many, perhaps most cases, nobody really knows that.

A small business "furloughs" you, says "don't worry, your job will still be here when we're through this thing".  But will the small business still be there?

A lot won't.

Small business can be hand to mouth. There is a lot of fixed expenses. You might forgive them the electric bill, but then the power company is the one taking the loss. The ripples are hard to map. Even if they take out a loan if they come back that's another bill on top of what likely were slim margins to begin with.

Ah, well.  Apparently the photo is actually from last year.  But it was fun while it lasted.

Well, yes, I got that. And it annoys me to no end that people (mostly Democrats) think this is OK.

The small businesses that have leases to pay are being crushed.

Every business has a list of expenses that they have to pay whether they work or not. Idle equipment and idle spaces still cost money.

Home based business can stretch a bit, if they were good savers. Some are more expense sensitive than others.

business competing against illegal aliens, like landscapers, risk losing clients to unlicensed and “undocumented” competition.

For client based businesses, it takes a long time and a lot of effort to land a good long term client, which can be lost easily. Clients don’t always care WHY you don’t show up. They know that they can get SOMEBODY to show up.

WA is “shutdown” until May 4. That is a month and a half of shutdown.

Fun times.

Todd Herman (glad he's back on air) local radio talk show just played a clip of a man talking to a King County worker washing street signs.

Now that is essential work. Especially since that worker is union pays dues which in turn become campaign donations to democrats.

Livehoods are being ruined. But the gov't cash pig must go on.

We have confirmation that Illinois shut down until April 30, but there are hints that it will be longer, possibly much longer.

As for "fun times", I think your definition of "fun" should be adjusted. Significantly.

this “shutdown”would be over in minutes if it was like a federal government shutdown, even though government employees never really lose a paycheck in a government shutdown.

(What about the next time?)

If every time a new pathogen emerges, we shut down the economy until we have a vaccine, as some are now proposing, there will not be much of a country left. We will have become hostages not only to tiny viruses but to anyone who would unleash them against us either unintentionally or intentionally.

New article presenting a (I think) solid analysis that methylene blue could also work on COVID. It is an older drug and well understood and should impact the same pathways that hydroxychloroquine does.

Did we really need to shut the country down?

Wuhan* looked very scary.

Italy* looked very scary.

But something is starting to look wrong here?

They told us it would be 2+ million dead, then 200,000 dead, now they are saying it may be as much as 60,000 dead. How much lower will they revise that number down?

Is this thing going to turn out to have been only a really bad flu season?

That would be both good and bad.

* What makes Italy and Wuhan so different from the US? (We can trust the numbers out of Italy. For Wuhan, we have to go by what we saw, not what China claims.)

A couple of things:

  • We weren't on the front lines of this, so we had time to learn from the mistakes/successes in other countries.
  • For Italy, two words: social distancing, meaning the complete lack of it. Everyone is greeting with a kiss.

Reply to vxbush in 25:

the social distancing seems key.

Here on the far left coast, where people pretend to be all friendly and lovey dovey but are really extremely passive aggressive and socially distant, the virus appears to have crashed.

Another big difference between east and west coast is public transportation. West coasters talk a good game, but east coasters, particularly New Yorkers, actually use the damned stuff. We here in the left coast see pictures of people packed in tight in a subway car, but we don’t believe it. That is just too far out of our experience to accept as real.

I think it would be a disaster to treat the whole country as if it was New York.City.

i must also say that this malaria/lupus drug and methyl blue is hopeful.

Well, yes, but keep in mind, that's only AFTER draconian measures were taken.  To use an observation I saw at Insty today; to simply point out that the mortality predictions are declining, and from that conclude that this was overblown, is kind of like saying "see, I told you that fire wouldn't spread!" after the fire trucks have already shown up.

Smoking? I know Chinese smoke a lot; don't know about Italians.

Mass General has warned smoking (and vaping) can make one more susceptible ti COVID-19, and result in a worse case of it.

I need to find some dumb celebrity to tweet this crazy conspiracy theory.

COVID-19 is all a scam to get us to wear masks in public.

You see, there are aliens visiting, and their noses and mouths are different from us. To avoid people noticing, they wear masks. If everyone is wearing masks, they won't be noticed.
