Morning, campers. When I was growing up, we never celebrated Patriots' Day. I hadn't heard of it before until last week, to be honest. How deficient was my schooling?

It's a New England thing. We didn't celebrate it in NJ either.

That's okay; Illinois has Casimir Pulaski Day. Each state should probably have its own "signature" holiday.

It is a Massachusetts holiday, but I think some surrounding states also observe it.

And it is the day of the Boston Marathon. Not this year.

Boston has Evacuation Day, celebrating throwing the British from colonial houses.

It is March 17, same as St. Patrick's Day, which always made me think the Boston Irish had something to do with it (along with the similarity to St. Patrick throwing the snakes out of Ireland).

Good morning (late morning, as the case may be).

So I'd mentioned yesterday my friend who relayed that in a zoom call with a half-dozen or so of our high school crowd, who live mostly in downstate NY, each of those people knew "at least a dozen" people who'd died of covid-19.

When I talked to him again last night, he admitted that he probably misheard/misunderstood during that call; perhaps it was a dozen total (among them), perhaps even that figure had some double-counting, etc. Which is kind of what I expected.

Me, I know of only one acquaintance who has reportedly died of the virus - a former colleague who retired from my workplace maybe a half-dozen years ago.  Additionally, one of my cousins apparently lost his mother-in-law to the virus, she was 92 years old (I never met her).  That's it.

So I got an e-mail from my shooting range that they are selling/brokering the private sale of a number of firearms that are kept in storage in their vault, including several Class III full-auto weapons, to wit:

Mac 380 with suppressor, $7,995
Stemple 45 with suppressor, $8,495
AK-47, $23,000
1927 Thompson SMG, $23,000
Uzi, $13,000
Steyr AUG, $28,000
H&K 51, $38,000
M16, $23,000
Ruger ACC 556, $15,000

My birthday is coming up.  Well, in August.  Just putting that out there.

Thank you.  And since I don't want you all to have to agonize over the decision of "which one to get for him?", I endorse your plan, so I can choose "all of the above"

I mean, all together that's a mere $179,490.  I don't think I'm asking too much here.

So my ex took himself to the hospital last night because he had a massive headache and his blood pressure was up (it measured 210/120 at the hospital). He was negative for COVID-19, but he had a CAT scan and an MRI that indicated he'd had a TIA. This is not the world's biggest surprise - he has Type II diabetes, he's overweight (though not as much as he used to be), and he smokes. He nearly lost a toe to an infection exacerbated by diabetes two years ago. He's only 57 and it would be just devastating for the kids if anything happened to him, so prayers and good thoughts are appreciated.

Heh.  The other day I was restocking on booze; I noticed there was a guy about to come in the door of the liquor store, he already had dark sunglasses on, he was putting on gloves and a bandanna-mask.  It occurred to me, only a few months ago that would have had the owner reaching for the shotgun under the counter.   (If he has one.)

The time for the morning thread is (as seen in the forum page) 04:00 AM -7:00, because the server uses Pacific time

Georgia will be liberated on April 30th! As of Friday, gyms, nail and hair salons, and similar services will be allowed to open. Restaurants may reopen on Monday the 27th, but bars and clubs are still closed for now. Best of all, elective surgeries may proceed - I didn't catch an exact date for that, and I'm sure it will take a while to schedule all the people who've been waiting, plus the people who have become ill or been injured in the last five weeks.

Sign up for both Part A and B initially. I did.  No cost.

The information that came with my card states:

"Don't have part B?  In most cases, if you don't sign up for Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) when you're first eligible, you'll have to pay a late enrollment penalty for as long as you have Part B. Also, you may have to wait until the Medicare General Enrollment Period (Januarty 1 - March 31) to enroll in Part B and coverage will begin July 1 of that year."

Hope that is helpful.

It is helpful, but I believe I need to sign up for a specific plan. I asked my employer, and they told me to call the insurance (UHC). They emailed me earlier, with a link, but I tried the link and none of their medicare plans include my doctor. At about 40 miles outside of Boston, many doctors are out here because they aren't that good. Mine is good.

The complexity for me is how does this work with insurance through my employer (may I still have that!)

That is important to know before you chose a plan.  Some insurance companies won't cover medical if you get Part B as a supplement.  My employer plan with Aetna does, so I elected Part B.

Reply to midwestgak in 33:

I have UHC, known for not being that good. And my employer pays about 10% of the premiums.

When I read a news article about someone having problems with an insurance company, it often is UHC.

But that is the only coverage I can get through my employer that meets Massachusetts requirements.

It's nice to live in a red state. Governor Kemp didn't freak out and close everything immediately - he allowed cities and counties to make those decisions that made sense for them until it reached the point that statewide restrictions were necessary (April 2nd, weeks after most other states). He didn't send the state police to harass churchgoers or restrict sales of normal household items. I think that's why we didn't see widespread non-compliance or protests.

Sometime, I need to add something for editors to find hidden posts. Right now, I'd have to use SQL management studio to connect to the database and run a query.

We have several classes of users: Guests, Members, Editors, Administrators

Anyone can see public posts. Guests can post in public forums. Members have access to private forums (except ones marked for editors or admin). Editors can hide posts and create threads. Administrators can do all that and change user's status, such as making a guest a member, or hiding all posts by someone.

And that's the point - different parts of the country have been affected differently. I thought Atlanta would be more affected, considering we have the nation's busiest international airport, but it hasn't been that bad. I've been worried about my daughter and her boyfriend in Brooklyn. He went back to work today because his boss begged him to and offered to pick him up and drop him off at home every day so he wouldn't have to take the subway.

Kind of related: Another childhood friend in that same e-mail distribution responded by saying, inter alia: " I've stopped trying to count the number of folks I know who have/had CV-19. "

I replied, wow, I'm so sorry to hear that you know so many people have gotten sick; I must be just lucky so far, I only know two or three.

He then wrote back:  "For clarity - it's not that I know/have known that many people with CV-19, only that I've found that trying to count only upsets me.

I note that both he, and the guy who did the original "our high school friends know a dozen people each who have died from covid-19!... oh, wait, maybe not" e-mail are knee-jerk liberals.

I realize that two people do not a pattern make, but; do I sense a pattern here?

And like in WA the shutdown is poltical on the face of it. Any gov't union job was deemed essential while private sector same work was not.

Construction, landscaping, etc... anything the Gov. is depending on union support for re-election.

There is a weird interweaving of Terror of Virus and Love of Virus Destruction on the Left, it seems---a sort of pharmacological Stockholm Syndrome.

Over on PJM, the Leftist trolls have been practically partying like Spring Break over every news story about someone prominent in a religious community who has contracted or, even better, succumbed to the virus, accompanied by their urging everyone who might be conservative/churchgoing to "Go to church!"  The hatred for conservatives and for anyone professing religious belief is vibrant and rabid.
