I tried to get password reset done this weekend, but it won't get done. F*king ADT

First they set up a service call for 8-10 Sunday AM. Never showed. Set up one for today 12-5

Tech VERY GOOD. But they.never told him what part was the problem, so he didn't have one.

He deleted the faulty sensor so the alarm system works again (a motion detector we don't use when we or the dogs are at home, so no loss of security right now), went to get another one - only to find that it was supposed to be new but was a defective returned one.

So they have to set up another service call after he gets the sensor.

Tech deserves a bonus, to come out of management's salaries.

I'm hoping to put in the refresh button and the ability to post via the forum links tonight. Both should be easy.

No promises.

And there might be a disruption as I back up the databases and upload; will do that when things slow down, assuming I am done.

Well this is great!  I'm finally able to join in the conservation and I can't think of anything clever or witty to say.  Been a long time since I've been in a pub/bar without my husband, maybe that's why.  How about a little background on me, since I know a little bit about each of you.  I'm one month shy of my 64th birthday and my employer for the last 32 years has decided to eliminate my job and permanently lay me off.  To say I'm feeling a little off center right now is an understatement.  Other than that, life is good.

Join the age discrimination club. I got laid off about 2 years ago, and it took me 8 months to find a new position - and there is supposedly a great market for software engineers! Just not experienced ones. Lucked out getting a contract position at a government/educational lab as they used a very difficult coding test (1/3 of the people pass) and want just about anyone who can pass it. However, the longest I was with one company in a full-time position was 11 years; that company, once a very large computer company, is now gone. I've had a part-time position teaching online, on and off, for longer, but that also had periods of no teaching, like now.

I'll let others here tell their own stories.

That sounded terrible.  I'm not looking for sympathy.  This really is a very good thing.  I was not happy there anymore, I just didn't realize how unhappy I was.  When they first told me, I felt like a thousand pounds where lifted off my shoulders.  I didn't want to quit; that would have been like abandoning my obligations.  No one is happy there anymore and most are looking for other work.  I was just lucky to be set free.  I was planning on retiring next year, they just pushed the date up for me.

Kosh, I envy you.  I'm self taught on computer work and I had a very dumb teacher.  Needless to say, one of my best friends at work was the IT guy.  I actually hugged him good bye that day and I am NOT a hugger!

My wife gets great tech support. She's a public defender (contract). And she says some of her transcriptionists like me because I could extract the audio from videos and fix the sound levels so they could transcribe it easier.

I learned in high school. Few schools had access to computers at all at the time (early 1970's), but my PUBLIC high school had a computer rented by a rich alumnus for $2000/month, and you could get a VW Beetle for that back then. And I hung around MIT (they rejected me twice, however) for more access to computers.

I think I should retire here (link) as an exhibit

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 9:   I don't know if I can really afford to either, but we live a pretty simple life style here.  We have no mortgage or other outstanding loans to worry about; that definitely helps.  Have applied for Social Security already and that will pay the real estate taxes, car insurance and the light bill.  The next hurdle is health care for myself.  At least I have no health issues to deal with.  Husband can get on Medicare and has VA health care.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 10:   I was in high school at the same time.  I remember having to learn wire a computer board, my headache finally went away in 1985.  Decided maybe nursing might be my future, but that was too sad - you can't save them all.  Went into accounting instead; I like math, there's always an answer.

I teach math online (when I have a course). Many nurses, actually, as calculating dosages takes some math.

I teach "College Algebra" at a very large online university. I learned the material in junior high.

Now, if I wanted to show off, I'd give the school name.

Welcome, Alice! Like Kosh, I lost my job about 2 years ago and have been working contract ever since. My most recent contract ended last Friday so I'm looking for work as an instructional designer. I'm a younger, but still old enough that no one wants to hire me. I'm one semester away from getting my MS in Instructional Design and Technology and hoping that makes a difference. I'm looking forward to getting to know you - we definitely need new people!

Welcome Alice and good evening Kosh. I've not posted in awhile because I thought I'd have to re-register before I could post, LOL.  I had just logged out, apparently.  I do need to change my username, though, the PBJ will suffice.

I'm almost 72 but had wanted to keep working.  My husband (68) and I had a 38 year old plumbing business in So. Calif.  Hubby started having strokes in 2014 and had another one earlier this year.  Our lone plumber quit on March 1st and I had no choice but to close the business that I had been putting money into anyway.  My husband is in a retirement facility temporarily.  Since hubby was hurt while in boot camp and another time on a base, we have applied to the VA.  We won't know anything for another few months.  I would like to find some work but not sure if or when my hubby might be able to come home with less than two people doing 24 hr care.  So far I haven't really enjoyed this early retirement but putting the cat on my bed (after I take my blood pressure pills) and getting a little bit more shut eye is pretty nice. LOL

Blood pressure pills work well. Down from something like 200/100 to something sort of normal

Runs in the family. My father had high blood pressure, and my mother had to learn how to use the old devices, as his pressure was so high the electronic ones thought it was an error.

Mine was at least 180 over ninety something at one time.  It's pretty scary but the pills I take for it now seem to keep it in check.  Two BP pills every morning and one around 8:00 PM.

I didn't mean to make my job loss sound bad.  It's the greatest thing that could have happened.  I haven't felt this free since 1977!  I'm married to the man I dated as a senior in high school, 41 years now.  Started out as pen pals - he was in the Navy.  Really a great way to get to know someone, four years of correspondence.  Now it feels just like it did when we were dating.  So many people we know have lost their spouses in the past few years; I just want to make the most of what time we have left, be it a day or another 41 years.  We have one son (39), who finally got married just last year - he kept saying he didn't want to just "settle" with someone.  I'm so glad he waited, she's perfect for him and she likes her in-laws!

Reply to doppelganglander in 18:   Thanks for the welcome.  Hope you find the perfect job soon.  I'm lucky I'm too old for anyone to want me anymore, plus I don't have your skills.  I'd have been devastated if this had happened 10 yrs ago.  I live in a very rural area, not many good paying jobs unless you want 12 hr shifts in a hot, dirty factory.  Nothing wrong with factory jobs, but I've spent the last 32 yrs on a soft office chair in air conditioning with internet access.

I live about 40 miles outside Boston, where it is a LOT less expensive.  You can't get a 700 sq ft condo in Boston for what we pay for over 2000 sq ft house.

Lots of Help Wanted signs here - for CDL drivers. I think my blood pressure prevents those jobs.

Reply to Kosh's Shadow in 30:   Cost of living is very low in my area; housing, food, fuel are all affordable.  As to CDL drivers, obviously you've never seen me drive.  My country roads are fine, but anything over a two lane highway and I prefer to ride with someone else.  I hate traffic!  I do love Revo's (?) stories of going to the big city delightful though.  I can so relate.
