There was a Twilight Zone about a drunk gunslinger, who stopped gunslinging when a kid challenged him. I assume that was a trope of Westerns, and Blazing Saddles got it from the same source. I think of that, because town rowdies would make the gunslinger in the TZ episode sing "How dry I am"

The Ted Wallace side comes from the late '20s; Billy Murray's "Alcoholic Blues" from 1919 uses the "How Dry I Am" as a bridge.
