"Monstrous regiment of women" comes ultimately from the title of a book by John Knox "First Blast of the Trumpet against the Monstrous Regiment of Women," directed against Queen Mary of England, Mary Queen of Scots, and Catherine di Medici.

Reply to lucius septimius in 1: Interesting context. Thank you for that.
I recall seeing the John Knox house last time I was in Edinburgh, but I don’t think I did the tour.

Tired of the same old Christmas movies? Yes, "It's a Wonderful Life" is a great film, and so is "Miracle on 34th Street"---but how about "The Thin Man" with William Powell and Myrna Loy? "Stalag 17"---the inspiration for "Hogan's Heroes"---is pretty good, too. And there's always "We're No Angels," wherein escaped Devil's Island convicts Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov, and Aldo Ray save Leo G. Carroll and his family from Carroll's rapacious cousin, played by Basil Rathbone.

Reply to Occasional Reader in 10: I like the Muppet version of Christmas Carol, which adds a character, Rizzo the Rat - a reference to Midnight Cowboy, the character Ratzo Rizzo. Jukebox
