Looks like no one is here yet...guess I'll be drinking alone. Well, what the latest catastrophe Trump's caused today. I ran out of milk and I'm pretty sure it's somehow his fault. Seems like everything else is his fault. The network news is so disgusting, I don't know how anyone can watch, much less believe what they're broadcasting. I find myself pretty much watching only local stations about local stories; but even the local weatherman needs addressing. I think he's making it up as he goes. At least he doesn't blame Trump for the cold and rain!

Years ago I had a Spanish student who was a full-blown Franco supporter. It was, shall we say, interesting hearing his perspective on the world.

Howdy folks, California is on fire again. I'm thankful that we're not close to any of them but the humidity is "four" here and it got up to 95 or 96 degrees around here today. The wind is driving the blazes.

No fires here in the great north wet. We have had few lost tornadoes looking for trailer parks, but none were found We actually have been having a few nice days this fall with a few more pleasant days threatening to make an appearance in the coming weeks. Lows in the 40s. Some sun some clouds some rain lots of red, yellow and gold leaves on the deciduous trees. It is a site to see. Most of the leaves will be down by mid to Late November.

Reply to Alice in Dairyland in 13: There was one really bad one in our neighborhood in the early nineties, probably called the Eaton Canyon fire. It was started by a homeless person who was cold but sleeping out in the weather. It spread to some of the most beautiful areas around hereand took some beautiful, several million dollar homes. Our good friends lost theirs while they were away in Puerto Vallarta. Their son was house sitting and taking care of their dog. He and the dog had to break a window to get out and walk out. All of their cars were already aflame. They were devastated but so very grateful that their son and dog made it out of there.

Reply to Alice in Dairyland in 15: Maples are good for color and fairly easy to take care of. I have a Blood-good and a Crimson King. Very nice for color. The leaves on the Crimson King are almost black. There was no fall color change on that. The blood good goes from a deep read to a brighter red before leaf fall.

Reply to doppelganglander in 18: We're past peak here in northern Wisconsin, but there's still plenty of color. The colors were subdued this year. I think the record breaking amount of rain caused that. They seem to be more colorful in the dryer years. It also could be because it's been so cloudy. They show their colors much better in the bright sunshine.

Reply to Alice in Dairyland in 23: They are fairly cheap to buy if you are willing to start them small. I bought the blood good at Lowe’s, a local big hardware chain here on the far left coast, for under $20. The Crimson King I bought at an auction for $12.50. I thought I was bidding on a variegated maple. Oops. It is a nice tree all the same. Life is short. Buy what you want. Life is good.

Reply to Syrah in 26: There is a variety with a bright red bark, coral bark maple, that is worth keeping an eye out for. They tend to be a little pricey, at least around here, going for about a hundred or so. They have good color in the winter and the red bark makes for an attractive tree in the summer as well.

Reply to doppelganglander in 24: It took me years to get used to living in Los Angeles county but I like it now, especially our little town on the edge of a national park area. Our mountains are beautiful. Our daughter and I drove past the Huntington Library the other day and talked about the time all three of us checked it out together. That was a fun day. I still laugh at myself, pretending to read those beautiful old bibles, while I was as blind as a bat. LOL I was waiting for my first cataract surgery at the time.

There are two “best times” to plant a tree. 1. Twenty years ago. 2. Today.

Reply to Syrah in 33: The worst time to plant a tree is when you're "old"! You'll never get to see it in its glory. I guess you should think of it as a gift to future generations. I'm glad the people to built this house in 1930 planted the trees they did. I sure enjoy them, even raking the leaves. I use them as mulch in flower beds to keep the weeds down. Works great.

Reply to Syrah in 32: Thanks for thinking of us. We had a little one start, about six weeks ago, right in the canyon our street leads to. I could see the smoke everywhere when I was visiting my husband and by the time I drove through Pasadena I could see the plume. They didn't waste any time, brought in all types of planes and helicopters and got it under control that night. It wasn't completely out for several days though.

Reply to doppelganglander in 36: My hubby hasn't been good lately but is some better. I'll tell our daughter hello when I talk to her again. She called last night after a work related conference in Las Vegas. She had shared an Uber ride with another gal who ended up being the key note speaker at her conference. The gal was an assistant director of the FBI and had worked on the 9/11 attacks as well as the terrorist attack over Lockerbie, Scotland. It sounds like she was very interesting to talk to.
