Kosh:  Hope you saw my comment Friday regarding name symbolism in the Beggar's/Threepenny Opera, and found it of interest.  

There's a certain post-hoc versus propter-hoc issue with the names; it is my (possibly-faulty) recollection that the original John Gay drama used "MacHeath" throughout, and that "Mack the Knife" (Mackie Messer in the original-German Threepenny Opera) is a modern invention, which makes the allusions to being a "mack" and to knife symbolism more likely.  While I think that "peaching" for informing does indeed go back as far as the original work by Gay, there is also the possibility that the "Peachum" name is itself the origin of the slang term; I don't know quite enough to make a definitive statement either way, but I stand by saying that they are related one way or the other.

I did see the post. Didn't have time to respond early enough for you to see.

I do remember in high school German trying to translate Mackie Messer into English, from a recording and record player that made subway PA systems sound perfectly comprehensible./ (Interesting teacher that year - he was a Communist. The other German teacher I had was a Bruins fan and quite distracted during hockey season, but we did have to translate (iirc) Emil Und Die Dietektiven)

As for some of the comments, I wonder whether there is any relation between "peach" and, well, let's call him "Adam Schiff Impeachum"

Emil und die Detektiven -- standard third-year German story.  I didn't have to read it, oddly enough -- I was given Die Feuerschiff, a novel about a murder on a lightship moored in the North Sea.

The use of Mackie Messer was, I suspect, an attempt to come up with a name that would make more sense to a German-speaking audience insofar as MacHeath was well-known in England and something of a folk-hero but utterly unknown in Germany.  And the character is rather different -- any trace of heroism is absent in Brecht's character.

I think it was in 2nd year German class for me.

I had to take 2 languages in high school - Latin, and either French or German

Later, I learned all Latin teachers are would-be Centurions, as in this video
