With reference to the discussion of dogs, and pets generally, in Heaven, Kipling's poem Dinah in Heaven is relevant.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 1:   Thank you.  If I am fortunate enough to pass through the pearly gates, I know I will have many old, furry friends waiting to greet me.

This one, also by Kipling, always gets me:  His Apologies.

My dad still recalls a kid in his catechism class when he was about seven years old, who, upon hearing that animals did not get into heaven, flatly refused to go there if his dog could not be with him.

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 3:   The end is so hard.  I guess we should hope to live a long life with a quick end.  I read a comment earlier today about pets taking a piece of your heart when they pass, but it's no bigger piece than they deserve.

You insist on making me post yet the third Kipling verse on this subject:  The Power of the Dog

Reply to buzzsawmonkey in 8:   Why should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?  That's an easy one to answer...no one could ever love you like a dog can.  Well, maybe your parents, if you're lucky, but definitely your dog loves you.

Of course, Kipling answers the question the same way you do; he was merely posing it rhetorically.

I don't know who said, when you come home, your dog always runs to you

Well thanks for stirring up memories of past pets.  I am going out to enjoy the almost full moon.  We're supposed to get 8" of snow tomorrow so I don't think I'll be able to see it Sunday night.  Good night.

And then there’s the observation: try locking your spouse in the trunk of your car for a half hour, and then your dog in the trunk of your car for a half hour, and see which one is glad to see you when you open the trunk...
