Today's Torah portion was Shelach, about the spies who reconned Canaan and said that the Israelites couldn't conquer it.

With today's technology, we have images of two of the spies.

First, in disguise:

And another picture, with one of the Canaanites:

Chicolini: Now I ask you one...What is it has a trunk but no key, weighs two thousand pounds, and lives in a circus?

Prosecutor: That's irrelevant!

Chicolini: A relaphant? Hey! That's the answer...There's a whole lotta relephants in the circus.

Judge: That sort of testimony we can eliminate!

Chicolini: At'sa fine, I'll take some.

Judge: You'll take what?

Chicolini: A lemonade...A nice, cold glassa lemonade. (Aside to Firefly) Hey boss, I'm goin' good!

And a bit later, this bit with several instances of cultural appropriation. At least no blackface

Y'know, this whole summer solstice/observant business is sort of annoying.

Especially when you can't get enough people to stonehenge since they have to stay one stone apart, and they're all stoned.

But the SOUL-stice is celebrated by lighting bonfires of any nearby stores, police stations, or other businesses.

I was more or less forced to observe the sabbath for enough years of my life to say "no thank you."

And then there was the whole shellfish thing.

The BF asks me to pick a movie to watch. Then he tells me he wants to watch a program about eugenics. Yeah, it looks interesting,  but I don't want to watch it, not in the mood. He shoots down all my suggestions and keeps hounding me to watch the eugenics program. Three times. I finally threw the remote at him and left the room. It's not funny and it's not cute and if you can't respect my wishes and come to a compromise, I'm not interested in discussing it anymore.

The "They got guns, we got guns, all God's chillun got guns" is more "blackfacey" than the "hi-de-hi-de-ho" moment.  And, of course, the banjo "Hail, Fredonia" sequence, with "Turkey in the Straw," and the subsequent violin moment, is "cracker/hillbilly" stereotype.

I never got a chance to make a suggestion. There's a venn diagram of genres we both like, and I don't mind sticking to it when we're together. But don't tell me I can pick and then nag me to watch something I don't want to watch.

Parody

An old crab boat went sailin’ out
one dark and stormy day
Upon the waves that crested
as it sailed along its way
When all at once a tired old boat
Of hollow-eyed men they saw
Pullin’ empty pot after pot
Without a single claw

I want the crab count
And I want it now!
Ghost crabbers in the sea

Their hooks were still on fire
And their pots were made of steel
The waves were black and shiny
And their cold spray they could feel

A bolt of fear went through them
as they pulled pot after pot
For they saw the skipper pushing hard
and heard what crap they got

I want the crab count
And I want it now!
Ghost crabbers in the sea

Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred,
Their gear all soaking wet
They’re pulling hard to catch their quota
But they ain’t caught nothing yet

‘Cause they’ve got to fish forever
On the grounds where many die
With boats of ice and fire
And still, the captain cries

I want the crab count
And I want it now!
Ghost crabbers in the sea

The deck boss looked upon them
And words came from his throat
If you want to save your souls from hell
A-Fishing on our boat
Crabbers, change your ways today
Or with us you will freeze
Tryin’ to catch the Devil’s crab
Across these merciless seas

I want the crab count
And I want it now!
Ghost crabbers in the sea

Ghost crabbers in the sea

Ghost crabbers in the sea

Ghost crabbers in the sea
